Event organizers and city officials saidparade marchers and up to 4 million visitors commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising that triggered the modern LGBTQ movement, with corporate sponsorship and police protection that would have been unthinkable half a century ago. Similar parades were being held around the world, with celebratory events in liberal democracies and growing fights for equality in other places. North Macedonia held its first gay pride march on Saturday.
Vancouver's Pride Parade is the largest parade of any kind in Western Canada. The parade, which covered only one side of the street while the other remained open to traffic, ran from Nelson Park to Alexandra Park via Thurlow, Pacific and Beach. The VPS is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors and a handful of paid staff, who handle the finances, logistics and operations of the organization and events. In addition, many hundreds of volunteers are involved in running the events.
Depending on the country or city where the event is being held, the marches and parades often campaign for recognition and acceptance of same-sex marriage, legal protections for couples and families, anti-discrimination laws or trans rights.
