The chorus was founded by gay music pioneer Jon Reed Sims. The group does not require that members identify as gay or bisexual. The eligibility requirements for SFGMC are to be at least 18 years of age, to self identify as a man, and to pass the audition process defined by the Artistic Director.
Stooped and thin, shivering despite a bulky winter coat, Dennis Haney was barely recognizable to his friends in the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus when he auditioned last week for the new season. The conductor, Gregg Tallman, was skeptical about whether Mr. Haney was strong enough for the rigors of weekly rehearsals and frequent concerts with a chorus that has become a prominent part of the local cultural landscape.
