Priya Raman, James T Harwood. We examine connections between media use, intergroup contact, and acculturation in Asian Indian professionals in Silicon Valley, drawing on theories of immigrant acculturation, intergroup contact, and media effects. Quality of host contact positively predicted acculturation.
There are few validated acculturation measures for Asian Indians in the U. We used the California Asian Indian Tobacco Survey to examine the relationship between temporal measures and eleven self-reported measures of acculturation. These items were combined to form an acculturation scale.
Establishes a series of statistically significant correlations between the variables examined; compares these results with findings of other studies involving different immigrant groups. Asserts that the model provides a reliable basis for assessing acculturation characteristics of immigrants; concludes that the findings of this study provide an objective basis for the development of social and public policy aimed at accommodating acculturation needs of this particular immigrant group. Varudhini KankipatiUniversity of Kentucky Follow. The United States is home to nearly three million Asian Indians. The difference in Asian Indian and American cultures creates a need for Asian Indians to acculturate, upon migration to the U.
One hundred eighteen Asian Indian immigrants completed questionnaires assessing behavioral acculturation, values enculturation, and perceptions of the psychological and medical determinants of case descriptions of major depression and schizophrenia, as well as treatment-seeking recommendations and stigma associated with treatment seeking. Case vignettes depicted symptoms meeting the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders 4th ed. Results revealed that responses to male case vignettes elicited lower levels of endorsement of psychological determinants and higher levels of endorsement of biological determinants in comparison to female case vignettes.

Purpose: This systematic review aims to: a describe population characteristics and methodology used in health studies assessing acculturation, as measured by the SL-ASIA; b evaluate the use of the SL-ASIA in the included studies; c summarize associations between acculturation, as measured by the SL-ASIA, and health outcomes; and d provide recommendations for future research. Studies using the SL-ASIA in the context of mental or physical health outcomes in Asian adult populations were included, for a total of 14 studies. Results: Most studies were conducted with Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese immigrants, with the majority being foreign-born. All studies used cross-sectional designs with convenience sampling.

Even though the total SA American population is increasing rapidly, there is a paucity of information on the relationship between diet quality, acculturation and health outcomes such as Metabolic Syndrome MetS in the low-income South Asian SA sub-population. Our goal was to examine diet quality, degree of acculturation and their potential influence on MetS in a diverse sample of SA Americans. A convenience sample of adult SA men and women were studied using a cross-sectional study design.
