Whether you like it or not, there's no denying Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty stands as one of the most polarizing games ever. For those who couldn't jive with its twists, turns, and protagonist bait-and-switch, MGS2 spelled the end of Kojima's career—or, at least, indicated his series had finally jumped over the shark and into oblivion. One of the most anticipated games of all time quickly became the Internet's punching bag, and, three years later, Metal Gear Solid 3 acted as a direct response to this phenomenon: It actively washes its hands of and often directly mocks Sons of Liberty's antics, and instead pulls the series back to its roots with a focus on the man who would eventually become the 8-bit antagonist, Big Boss.
Every time a new Metal Gear is about to be released, I have to reorganize my ideas and memories about the saga, which is usually a tiring task. I started looking for accessible ways to have an overview of the different game events, but I figured out that there was no such a thing. I therefore decided to spend some of my spare time creating the Metal Gear Timeline: I hope you will like it and find it useful whether you're a lover or a hater of the saga.
During his time as a medic, Venom Snake saved Big Boss's life during the destruction of MSF in by shielding him from an oncoming explosion, losing his left arm and the use of his right eye in the process. Despite his sacrifice, Big Boss fell into a coma. Venom Snake was then placed into an artificially induced coma, undergoing hypnotherapy and plastic surgery so that he could protect Big Boss by acting as a body double.

Ever wondered why Solid Snake is called Solid Snake? Bob "Snake" Plissken, apparently. Let's start with Snake.
The Metal Gear series is a complicated, circular mess of plotlines filled with surprises, twists, and betrayals. It's a mess we love, but it's still a mess. Even if you've been paying attention, you may have missed some things.
